Different Software Types
Regardless of what industry you are in, you will need software to make your work efficient. However, knowing what software means and which software to use is just as important, if not more important, than having it readily available for employees to use. Software is a computer program or application configured to respond to a user’s command in a specific manner; there are currently four types of software: system, application, programming, and driver software. Organizations tend to encounter a crossroads when deciding on the best software for their business, so it’s best to know how each one functions before investing.
System software provides a seamless working operation across devices, applications, and users to create a smooth, unified experience. A perfect example would be Microsoft Office – Microsoft word, Microsoft excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint are all a part of the same system. Have you ever noticed your applications needed a system update? That system update keeps each of your applications, your Microsoft office system, and your devices in order! Application software is a use-end program specifically used for completing specific tasks. An example would be Microsoft PowerPoint; while it is a part of Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint is specifically for creative visual presentations. You can think of this software as an application that a user must download onto a device to use it.
The program software is a little more complicated than the last two listed, as it is software that requires coding for operation. Most of this software is created to write or debug other software, requiring professional experience in programming languages such as python. Driver software is a type of software that controls a device, such as your computer. A great example of driver software is a modem or printer. Both the modem or printer are connected to a computer to control and execute a function.
All software can be confusing, but understanding teach of the four types in a practical way will help organizations make the best decision for their businesses!
