On Saturday, May 8, 2021, our nation was hit by yet another unexpected event, this time affecting most of the eastern region. The Colonial Pipeline, one of the largest U.S. suppliers for oil, was impacted by a cyberattack. The major pipeline, headquartered in the city of Alpharetta, GA shut down its 5,500 miles of pipelines that sent both gas prices and customers into a frenzy.

This incident is another reason why many tech companies, including us at GovSense, advocate for revamping infrastructures within the government. It’s unclear why the pipeline was the target of the cyberattack, but it is evident, that it is timet to invest in new technology that can better secure operations. When there are attempts of cyberattacks, inevitable natural occurrences, and weather changes, our government should have the capacity to withstand the challenge with a strong infrastructure.

Many believe that cloud technology is only about staying up-to-date with the latest advancements and keeping up with the Joneses. But the reality is, it’s more than staying with current times, and it’s more than just saving money; it’s about anti-fragility, security, and reliability in moments that seem unfathomable.

The time to consider cloud technology is now. Not solely because of this incident, but because we live in a world where we can no longer predict what will happen, so we must be prepared for any situation that may arise. A year ago, the coronavirus impacted the U.S. to great lengths; almost two month ago, the Texas emergency from an unexpected winter storm brought the state’s operating system to its knees and now the Colonial Pipeline. We must have systems prepared to be flexible and resilient, especially when we need it the most and with Biden’s plan to invest millions into technology-based initiatives.
